Hartfell Gravel Cyclists
Welcome to the Hartfell Hill Runners Gravel Cyclist Corner
We are often to be found on many of the trails we enjoy running, but we venture to new places too. Dumfries and Galloway is a paradise for gravel bikers, with 100's of km of forestry and upland tracks. One of the Seven Stanes mountain bike trails, the Glentrool Big Country Loop is perfect for a day out on gravel bikes and the nearby tracks just north of Gatehouse of Fleet have hosted some big gravel bike events, including a UCI World Cup. Another trail network centres around Nithsdale with the Dalwhat, Shinnel and Scaur glens giving great riding with some chunky climbs. To the West of our area, the Romans and Reivers route crosses Ae forest and gets you to Moffat, where many trails await. A sharp push on the R&R route gets you into the Eskdalemuir trail network, a favourite playground for us and from there to Kielder on the marked cross-border route, so we have rides from an evening out to multi-day expeditions.
We run a mix of summer midweek evening rides and longer weekend rides but on a fairly informal basis. Like the club social runs, we go at a steady chatting pace and wait for everyone. We do sometimes tackle some quite rough trails, so if you are inexperienced in off-road cycling or worried about your kit, do ask us first and we can advise you. Some of the routes might be suitable for a touring bike, but not for a regular road bike. We'll put rides up here when they are planned. There is also a WhatsApp group for the bikers where you can keep up to date with the Hartfell Gravel scene. The group has some keen wild camping bikepackers too, so do ask if you fancy some overnight adventures.
